A retired Newark police officer died and another victim was severely burned in a South River home explosion, officials tell Daily Voice. Kevin Gilbert, a 26-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, died in the mysterious explosion around 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2, South River Mayor Peter Guindi tells Daily Voice. Gilbert was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim suffered burns over 90 percent of his body and was transferred from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to St. Barnabas Hospital, according to Guindi. Eric Baumgartner survived the strike after a Woodbridge police officer performed life-saving CPR. As family and friends say a final goodbye to a 23-year-old woman from the region who died after being struck in the head by a passing train, she is being remembered for her desire to help others. Putnam County resident, Hope Mantovi, of Mahopac, was struck around 8:30 p.m., Saturday, March 19, in Woodlawn in the Bronx, said Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials. Woman Who Ran Back Inside Burning West Orange Home To Save Cats Dies
A 66-year-old woman died in a weekend fire in West Orange, authorities said. Cynthia Johnson ran back inside her home on Valley Way to try to save her cats as the house burned around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said. Johnson was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston where she was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. that day. The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.

Fire Victim Burned, Airlifted In Central Jersey Blaze: FD
A fire with a victim was being battled in Central Jersey, authorities said. The fire was reported at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 on McKinley Avenue South in Woodbridge Township, initial reports said. A medical helicopter was requested for a 30-year-old woman who had suffered burns, an unconfirmed report said. A spokesman for the Iselin Fire Department confirmed that one victim was airlifted to St. Barnabas Hospital. No other details were released.
