Flynn, who joined more than 400 swimmers in the 1-kilometer event hosted by New York City Swim for older competitors ages 15 and up, completed the open-water course in 16 minutes and 8 seconds to take third among the women and 10th overall.
“I was nervous at first about swimming through open water – it was my first time doing it," Flynn said. "The currents would flow in one direction for a little while and then go back the other way.“
Flynn entered the race on her own initiative, and hopes to swim the event again next year.
“It was my personal goal to swim this open water event and I found out about it on my own,” she said.
Spartans coach Mike Kane said Flynn's drive and strong swimming performance, “are typical of Kate. She’s the leader of our team. She’s always taking us to new places.”
Flynn trains at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center in Ossining, the home of the Spartans Swim Team. For more information, contact the Ossining Spartans through their website or stop by the pool deck for more information.
