The Yankees lost to the Rays 4-0, but the final score won't be remembered in this game for the ages. Rivera, who is retiring at season's end, will end his legendary career with more saves and more postseason saves than any pitcher in major league history.

Rivera cried as a sold-out Yankee Stadium shook with “thunderous ovation,” ESPN reported. With two outs in the ninth inning, Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte, who both came up to the Yankees with Rivera in 1995 for the first time after knowing each other in the minors, were sent from the dugout to pull baseball’s most acclaimed relief pitcher from the mound.

Rivera is well-known around Westchester for his charitable endeavors on behalf of children and families through his Mariano Rivera Foundation, which also addresses children’s needs through education, health and wellness, and social and economic developments in New Rochelle and his native Panama.
