YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Two Yorktown High School students are at the top of the class.

Ellen O'Callaghan and Marlee Pincus were named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

O'Callaghan said she credited Yorktown's academic and extracurricular offerings for her success.

“Yorktown High School provided the unique opportunity to explore many things, rather than focus solely on one interest,” said O’Callaghan. “I learned a lot not only through my courses but in extra-curricular activities that taught teamwork, leadership and other skills that help support learning.”

O’Callaghan’s is captain of both the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams, vice president of the Class of 2018, sports editor of the school newspaper, a member of the National Honor Society, a member of VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse), a tutor and coach in lacrosse and basketball.

The valedictorian said she plans to play lacrosse at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in biology. She plans to attend medical school after college.

A three-season athlete, Pincus runs cross country, winter track and spring track and is the race walker for Yorktown High School. In other pursuits, Pincus is the co-president of the high school’s chapter of Amnesty International and co-founder of Beat the Hunger.

Pincus also volunteers at Neighbors’ Link in Mount Kisco and lived with a host family in Costa Rica. Pincus said she is interested in going into health care.

“I would like to improve access to healthcare for the Spanish-speaking community in the U.S.,” she said.

Joseph DeGennaro, the principal of Yorktown High School, said he was very proud and impressed by the students.

They are academically smart and well-rounded and really great examples of the district philosophy to develop the whole child," DeGennaro said.
