The $72 million budget is 2.15 increase from the previous year's budget and carries a tax levy increase of 0.74 percent.
Superintendent of Schools Brian Monahan said district taxpayers in the town of Cortlandt will see a tax rate increase of $57, while Peekskill residents will see their tax rate decrease by $60.
"The tax rates and equalization rates usually do not break out the same, so for the residents of our district that live in the city of Peekskill, the taxes will go down," Monahan said.
The district will likely eliminate three teaching positions at the elementary school level, he added.
"Those are due to lower enrollment rather than simply [budget] cutting," Monahan said. "As we look at our numbers, we will probably need three fewer teachers next year. Sadly they are young, enthusiastic, talented teachers."
Enrollment at the middle school and high school have remained about the same, he said.
There will be three contested positions on the Board of Education in the May 21 election, according to Monahan. But he said he could not yet confirm whether any of the trustees up for re-election would seek another term. A proposition will be up for a vote on whether to purchase $555,000 in new district vehicles.
Monahan and three members of the school board will be holding an informal meet and greet Saturday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Dunkin Donuts at 113 Albany Post Road in Buchanan. All members of the community are invited to give comments or ask questions.
