Fifth-Graders Bid Goodbye to Furnace Woods School

MONTROSE, N.Y. - Apple picking. D.A.R.E. Raising chicks and butterflies. Visiting Albany. Those were just some of the fond memories a few fifth-graders mentioned of their six years at Furnace Woods Elementary School during a moving up ceremony this week.

"I will use all the knowledge I learned at Furnace Woods not just in middle school but my whole life," said Dennis Emanuel, Jr., a student in Diane Hughes' class.

Dennis was one of 64 fifth-graders who received their diplomas and advice from their teachers as they embark on a new phase of their educational journey at nearby Blue Mountain Middle School.

"This is a really important moment in your life. Live in the moment," Hughes said. "Believe in yourself and work hard. Laugh with others. Cherish every day. Good luck and may all your dreams come true."

Principal Helene Kane quoted Dr. Seuss: "And will you succeed? Yes! You will indeed, 98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed."

"You are a wonderful group. The sun is shining outdoors and in here it's the brightest," she said. "Blue Mountain is an incredible place that anyone would fine unforgettable."

Fifth-grader Emma Jane Liebman said she is ready to move on. "I will miss Furnace Woods School. Look out Blue Mountain. Here I come!" she said.
