“This yearly tradition truly showcases the power of how student engagement aligns with our CHUFSD mission and vision,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Deborah O’Connell. This year’s event drew more than 60 students from grades kindergarten through 12.
“I am so proud of our Croton students,” said Deborah August, director of technology. “The variety of experiments and the volume of hands-on experiments is the most impressive list we have had so far. We had students who were coding and creating, and other students who were researching, testing a hypothesis and presenting their results. Students were building bridges, explaining why the ozone layer is so important, exploring constellations and demonstrating pressure changes.”
In addition, 16 AP Environmental Science students presented their research to attendees. Topics ranged from “The Impact of Indian Point on Water Quality Parameters in the Hudson River” to “Increasing Awareness of the Loss of Biodiversity on Islands.”
New this year were four learning events led by students, including “Coding to Make Your Own Website,” “Making Art with Math,” “Solving a Rubik’s Cube” and Makerspace. “This is one event where all students K-12 have a chance to connect and learn from each other,” added August. “It is truly wonderful to see the older students engaged in the elementary school student presentations. And I believe that everyone who attended not only learned something about science but also developed a curiosity to possibly explore more.”
