Burke's Alewerks, owned by Brian Burke and originally located in Hanover, moved its operations to West Newbury in January 2023, and announced its closure on Monday, May 8, according to a post on the brewery's Facebook page.

"It is with regret and sadness that I announce the end of Burke’s Alewerks," the post reads. "We poured our last pint this past week."

"Heartbroken" customers took to the comments section to share memories and bemoan its closing.

"We are shocked," read a comment posted by Mass. Brew Bros, a Massachusetts craft beer site. "You were just getting started in Newton, what happened?"

"I’m emotional," said one commenter, who said he got married at the brewery's original Hanover location. "Tears! I was upset when you left us in Hanover but so happy for you that you were off to a more visible and presumably profitable location. You poured (pun intended) your heart and soul into this business. To see it come to an end is devastating."

The brewery was known for its traditional European and American-style ales and a taproom that served as a community gathering space.

"If you walked through our doors and shared a pint with us, we are grateful," Burke's Alewerks's closing announcement said. "There are so many wonderful memories and experiences and it was a truly worthwhile and most excellent journey!"
