"We've had people out to the door three or four times today," said John Mattis, a Republican election inspector.

Polls are open until 9 p.m.

Michael Hanahoe, Mattis' Democratic counterpart, said he believed voter turnout was driven by the sheer amount of time people had been exposed to the election.

"Just the interest in the election, I guess. Everyone's been talking about it for a year," Hanahoe said. The library traditionally serves election district 34. Due to an executive order by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, any New York voter can vote there.

Other than discussion of whether or not one had power, and the Hendrick Hudson Free Library's incredibly busy week, signs of Hurricane Sandy seemed scarce on Election Day. Some polling places had power restored at the eleventh hour, such as Blue Mountain Middle School, which serves the 11th, 22nd and 33rd election districts, and had power restored Monday.

About 30 people were in the community room at one time, waiting for their turn to vote.
