For the first time in eight years, property taxes will be increasing in Westchester County.

Legislators unanimously voted to override County Executive Rob Astorino's veto of their $1.8 billion 2018 budget, which carries a two percent increase in the property tax levy.

This is the first budget under Astorino, who was defeated for re-election in November, to have a tax increase.

“There’s no reason to raise property taxes on the already overburdened residents and businesses of Westchester," Astorino said when he vetoed the budget.

The budget scraps the $30 million Astorino said the county would receive from privatizing Westchester County Airport and increases funding for non-profits and adds positions on the county executive's office and department of public works.

"We needed to get real with our finances," Majority Leader Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining said. "The proposal given to us was far from that.”
