Ruth R. Kaplan, 97, Of Croton-on-Hudson, Teacher, Environmentalist

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Ruth Rubin Kaplan died July 31. She was 97.

Kaplan was born July 20, 1916, to Paul and Frieda Rubin in the Bronx. She graduated from Hunter College in 1937 and later earned a master’s in education from Lehman College. After marriage she moved with her husband to Croton-on-Hudson in 1948. She spent many years volunteering for numerous organizations such as the American Red Cross, Croton Recreation Dept. and Croton-Harmon PTA, before beginning a teaching career with the Croton-Harmon schools in the mid 1960s. She was a member of the Cortlandt Conservation Committee and chaired the subcommittee on environmental education. Kaplan is survived by her children, Ian Joel of Portland, Ore., Madelyn Kaplan of Croton-on-Hudson and Phyllis (Michael) Cobb of Croton-on-Hudson; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private memorial service.
