Robert D. Swanson, 80, Croton Resident Owned Financial Firm

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Robert D. "Bob" Swanson of Croton-On-Hudson, died on Friday, March 13, at the New York State Veterans Home in Montrose. He was 80.

Swanson was born to Robert L. and Sadie (Voigt) Swanson on July 13, 1934, in South Bend, Ind.

Swanson  served in the U.S. Army as a counter-intelligence specialist in Germany in the 1950's. He was a member of his Army post's basketball team, and enjoyed traveling with the team throughout Germany to play other American Army teams.

Returning to the U.S. to study at Teachers College Columbia University, he received a master's degree in psychology of literature. He taught English and psychology of literature near Schenectady, N.Y. He was also actively involved in the Unitarian Church in Schenectady, and enjoyed the opportunity to preach a sermon to the congregation.

After completing a master's degree in business, Swanson began a career in finance. He worked as a securities analyst and a portfolio manager at several New York firms. In 1982 Swanson started his own firm, Swanson Associates, and continued as an investment adviser until his retirement in 2008. Throughout his life, sports were an important source of friendship, exercise, and fun. He transitioned from high school football to college and Army basketball, later becoming an avid tennis player.

He is survived by his wife Sharon (Boehmke) Swanson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Swanson Wolf. 

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at noon in St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 6 Old Post Road North, Croton. Committal will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church or the National Parkinson Foundation.
