Westchester Nemesis 'Irene' Retired From Hurricane Name List

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Irene, who knocked out power to so many Westchester County homes last summer, won't bother anyone again - at least, not in hurricane form.

The name has been retired from the rotating list of names assigned to Atlantic hurricanes, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. The name was retired "because of the fatalities and damage it caused in August 2011," the agency said.

It will be replaced by Irma.

The storm killed 41 people in the United States and eight others in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It caused about $15.8 billion in damage. Its biggest impact in Westchester County was heavy rain and widespread power outages, some of which lasted more than a week.
