Verplanck River Rescue Among County Police Reports

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- The Westchester County Police Marine Unit rescued three people Sunday after their canoe capsized in the Hudson River off Steamboat Dock in Verplanck.

The three were clinging to the partially submerged canoe when officers aboard the Marine 3 patrol boat arrived and plucked them from the water.

A passing vessel piloted by a Sloatsburg, N.Y., man, also stopped to render assistance after the boat capsized at about 5:30 p.m.

Rescued were Michael Scully, 44, and Mathilde Scully, 45, of San Antonio, Texas and Jeremy Hetman, 18, of Fort Montgomery, N.Y. They were not injured and declined medical attention.

County police transported the three back to Stony Point Bay Marina and towed their canoe there as well.

The canoers told Detectives C.J. Westbrook and Mark Carey and Police Officer Sean Coffey that the canoe had been capsized by a large wake caused by passing vessels. The 15-foot canoe was crossing the Hudson from Stony Boat when it capsized in the middle of the river in an area where the water is 65 feet deep.

Several other items were also reported to county police this week:

On Thursday at 6:25 p.m. Hastings Ross, 40, of Harris Road, Katonah, was charged with second-degree criminal contempt, a misdemeanor, after he allegedly violated an order of protection by leaving a voice mail message for a person in Cortlandt that he is prohibited from contacting by court order. He was arrested by detectives from the General Investigations Unit.

On Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. the owner of a Mohegan Lake construction company reported to county police that three power saws were missing from his business. The owner suspects a former employee is responsible for the thefts.

On Thursday, July 28 at 8 a.m. a resident of Emery Hill Road reported that someone broke into three cars that were parked in front of several residences on the street. The break-ins apparently occurred between midnight and 1:30 a.m. A small amount of change and a set of keys were reported stolen.
