Storms Roll Through Westchester, Cause Outages

This story was updated at 10:35 p.m.

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — Powerful thunderstorms with frequent lightning and strong, gusty winds were moving through Westchester County on Thursday evening.

As of 9:45 p.m., 1,875 Con Edison customers were without power in Westchester, mostly in Cortlandt, Greenburgh, Rye and North Castle. Crews were to continue restoration efforts throughout the night, according to Con Ed officials. The company expected most customers to have power restored by Friday morning.

NYSEG was reporting 4,083 customers without electricity as of Thursday night. Of those, 1,870 were in Lewisboro, 1,078 in North Salem, 1,086 in Somers and six in Bedford.

The National Weather Service posted a severe thunderstorm warning for Westchester until 11 p.m. The storms, the alert says, could produce quarter-size hail and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

The fast-moving storm, officials say, could knock down trees and power lines and cause outages. The same storms are believed responsible for a possible tornado in Elmira, N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a statement late Thursday saying there were at least 20,000 customers without power due to the powerful storms.
