The metro area had an estimated 19,831,858 residents in 2012, up a half-percent from 19,729,930 residents in 2011. More than 101,900 people moved into the area from 2011 to 2012.
Population changes were not available for Westchester County, which had a total population of 949,113 in 2010.
New York City remains the most populated city in the United States, according to the Census Bureau.

- New York-Newark-Jersey City – up 0.5 percent
- Ithaca – up 0.8 percent
- Albany-Schenectady-Troy – up 0.2 percent
- Elmira – up 0.1 percent
- Rochester – no change
- Glens Falls – down 0.2 percent
- Syracuse – down 0.2 percent
- Utica-Rome – down 0.2 percent
- Kingston – down 0.4 percent
- Binghamton – down 0.7 percent
