A mural made by the Girl Scouts of Troop 2956 will also be presented. The mural earned them the Silver Arrow Award.
Among those expected to attend the ceremony are Croton-On-Hudson Mayor Leo Wiegman, of the Town of Cortlandt Town Board Member Debbie Carter-Costello, Sara Cox, director of Member Services and Nutrition of the Food Bank for Westchester, and Gloria Laemmel, trustee of Asbury United Methodist Church. Asbury UMC is the home of the pantry.
The name change helps to identify that the pantry is in Croton, and it makes the fact that food is provided more obvious. “Bank” was the common name for an agency such as this one in 1983, when the organization was founded, but these types of places are typically called food pantries or soup kitchens now.
No changes are being made in the services of the organization – clients are able to visit once a month to obtain three to four days worth of food.
The mission of the pantry is, “to work to alleviate hunger in Croton, the Town of Cortlandt (including its incorporated villages) and the City of Peekskill among families and individuals whose income is insufficient for their needs, through distribution of food and incidental supplies to them without charge.”
The Croton-Cortlandt Food Pantry is still at Asbury United Methodist Church, 19 Old Post Road South, Croton-on-Hudson.
It is open from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday.
