Winter Blues? Ha!

Living in the Northeastern part of the country, winter is, like taxes, a non-negotiable part of life.

The so called “winter blues,” are, however, completely unnecessary. The solution: get a hobby. Get two. Get a whole bunch of hobbies. Most people hunker down, put on their “fat sweater,” and wait until spring.

My first suggestion to conquer those winter blues: Pick an NFL and NHL team and follow them. Sports are a great way to have something positive to look forward to and a great source of indoor fun to share with family and friends.

My second suggestion: embrace the snow. As an avid snowboarder, there are few things better a powder day. Don’t know how to snowboard or ski? Make it your personal self improvement goal to learn. Not only are skiing and snowboarding fun and exciting things to do with family and friends, they’re a great way to get outdoors and get some exercise and fresh air in your lungs.

In addition to another way of having fun, simply being outdoors has been shown to have many mental health benefits. Lastly, the winter is an excellent time to begin a fitness regimen.

During the winter, people are simply indoors more often than other times of the year. Utilize that time to being a fitness regimen. Exercise has been clinically shown to improve melatonin, which a lack of has been linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as the Winter Blues.

The bottom line is to make the most of the winter; don’t just get through it, get to it!
