Verplanck's Riverfront Park To Get Facelift

VERPLANCK, N.Y. – Steamboat Riverfront Park in the hamlet of Verplanck will get a facelift from the Town of Cortlandt. The park will receive new picnic tables and benches from the town, and a new community boat launch.

“We cleaned up the park,” said Councilman Frank Farrell. “There’s some property we cleaned out, and now that we have the space, we said, ‘Let’s put some picnic [tables].” The town authorized the purchase of benches, picnic tables and some playground equipment, along with a community boat launch.

The park will be called the Martin Aviation Playground, after James Martin, who owned the former seaplane base. The former owner deeded the property to the town upon his death, nearly five years ago.

In addition to a community boat launch and new playground equipment, the park will also have a small memorial to veterans. The town was contacted by the veterans, and requested that the memorial be for all veterans in general, and not focus on one part of the Town of Cortlandt.

The property deeded to the town also includes several trailer parks, which will have to leave the riverside piece of property by 2016.
