CORTLANDT, N.Y. Debi Pacia Pascale breathed a sigh of relief after a breast cancer scare in September. Her test results were free and clear, but the experience snapped her into action.
Pascale began raising money through her salon to donate to Hudson Valley Hospital Center, where she received her mammogram and diagnosis. I was really impressed with how caring the staff was during my scare and how they were able to get me in so quickly and get my results within 45 minutes, she said. I was so grateful that they were able to tell me even before I left the building that everything was going to be alright.
Pascales staff at The Cutting Edge Hair Salon in Cortlandt raised over $900 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October by selling pink hair extensions. Niel Rosoff, formerly of Dana Cole Salon, donated the pink hair extensions. Another staff member held a raffle for a $100 gift certificate to the salon.
The donation will be part of a $5 million fundraising campaign to offset the cost of the hospitals new Cancer Center, formally opening on Wednesday, November 17.
The opening of this new Comprehensive Cancer Center proves that people do not have to go into New York City to get the quality of care they need, said William C. Dauster, executive director of the Foundation of HVHC. We could not have accomplished this without the support of the community. We thank all our donors large and small for their commitment to this cause.
The new Cancer Center attracted attention for being the home of the nationally recognized Ashikari Team. The Ashikari Team, founded by Roy Ashikari, is three surgical oncologists who pioneered preventative breast cancer surgeries for high risk patients. The team has also uses a unique one-surgery method of performing a mastectomy while placing implants, which the Ashikari doctors say minimizes patient trauma.
