Former Croton Carpenter Mekeel Dies at 77

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Joel "Whitey" Mekeel formerly of Croton-on-Hudson died at his home in Brooksville, Fla. on Dec. 24. He was 77. A funeral service will be held on Saturday. 

Born Sep. 24, 1934 in Peekskill, he was the son of Ira and Viola Mekeel. A retired member of the International Brotherhood of Carpenters Union Local 163, Mekeel enjoyed spending time outdoors and with his family.

He is survived by his wife Dorothea, his son Jeffrey Mekeel of Croton-on-Hudson, his daughter Maureen (Michael) Palmietto of Cortlandt Manor, his sister Jill (Gus) Beirne of Brooksville, his brother Jack (Maureen) Mekeel of Cortlandt Manor and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Ira Mekeel, Jr.

Visiting hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton-on-Hudson. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, followed by burial at Amawalk Hill Cemetery.
