Hudson Valley Hospital Breast Health Fair Invites Bra Decorating

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Conservative, cosmopolitan and sometimes downright flashy, the bra has had many redesigns in its lifetime. The Hudson Valley Hospital Center is inviting members of the public to design their own bra decorations as part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and decorated bras will be hung in the Cheryl R. Lindebaum Cancer Center during a Breast Education Health Fair.

Well-constructed bras are recommended, as is a size 36C for a larger "canvas." Straps, cups and sides of bras must be completely decorated.

"I've been decorating it with my daughters. I think it's a fun thing and the more you get involved in it the more fun time you have," said Susan Cornelius, a patient coordinator at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center, located in the hospital center.

Excluding cancers of the skins, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and account for one in three diagnoses, according to the American Cancer Society. Cornelius has never been treated for breast cancer.

Cornelius, noting the rates of breast cancer among women, said, "Being a woman myself how could I not support this cause?"

The Breast Educational Health Fair will be held 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center, 1978 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor. For more information about or to participate in the bra decorating event, contact the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Marketing Department at 914-734-3794.
