The series begins Friday and presents six performances through Saturday, March 28 in conjunction with its upcoming contemporary art exhibition "Crossing Borders: Memory and Heritage in a New America" on view Tuesday, March 17 through Saturday, May 2.

The exhibition presents the work of First Generation and New American artists who explore memory, identity and cross-culturalism within New York’s immigrant community.  Many of the performances feature talks with exhibiting artists to further explore the exhibition’s themes.  Several free artist-led family programs will also be featured.

“ArtsWestchester’s downtown White Plains performance space is the perfect intimate venue to experience live music performances," said Janet T. Langsam, ArtsWestchester chief executive officer. 'In this unique series of six performances Westchester residents will be treated to sounds from around the world and will be presented with music, art and dialogue that entertains audiences and crosses cultural borders.”

Crossing Borders in Performance kicks off this weekend with two events – a blend of urban jazz and traditional Colombian music on Friday, Feb. 27, and Mediterranean-influenced music performance on Saturday, Feb. 28.

The remainder of the series features a wide range of performance artists who highlight a diversity of cultural and musical styles, including: rising star Nigerian saxophonist Zem Audu (Friday, March 20), Monika Jalili, who explores pre-revolution Iranian popular and folk culture through music and poetry (Saturday, March 21), performance artist Francis Mateo, with a discussion on Dominican history expression through arts (Friday, March 27) and a special performance by avant-garde visionary pianist Margaret Leng Tan (Saturday, March 28).

All performances are at ArtsWestchester, 31 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains. Admission is $20 for ArtsWestchester members and $15 for students with ID.
