The popular hot dog stand reopened this weekend and O’Sullivan rejoiced with her first Walter’s hot dog since 2013. She had a bit of a wait on a long line, typical for Walter’s on a beautiful weekend afternoon.
“We drove by days after it closed and we were crying,” she said, after picking up her order along with friends Nell O’Rourke and Nicole Como, all of Pelham.
O’Sullivan said she will be Instagramming her first outing as part of a Walter’s Hot Dogs contest to win a $25 Walter’s gift card. Customers can Instagram their first outing with the hashtag #welcomebackwalters and tagging @waltershotdogs to enter. It will give out three gift cards to its favorite photos Monday.
Needless to say, O'Sullivan is a life-longer.
“I’m 16 and I’ve been going since I was 5,” she said. O’Rourke ordered the curly fries, which are also made regular, sweet spuds and potato puffs.
From life-longer to first-timer, Daniel Pedroza said his roommate had been hyping Walter’s Hot Dogs to him since it closed.
“It looks good and I’m pumped to try it,” he said.
Similarly, Zach Gray’s girlfriend, a Mamaroneck native, had told him about Walter’s Hot Dogs and he finally tried it before it closed last year. While only his second time at Walter’s he sounded like a life-longer.
“I will be back multiple times,” he said.
The milk shakes, sweet potato fries and, of course, hot dogs are keenly American, Gray said, and offer the classic American experience.
The hot dog stand sits opposite Mamaroneck High School on Palmer Avenue. Built in 1928, the Chinese pagoda with a copper roof was declared a historical landmark in 1991 and listed on the Westchester County Inventory of Historic Places.
Walter Warrington’s “split” hot dog, grilled in secret sauce and served on a toasted bun with homemade mustard has drawn praise from Gourmet Magazine, The New York Times, Westchester Magazine, Roadside Delights and local governments.
