PEEKSKILL, N.Y. — Homestyle Desserts Bakery is a 42-year staple of the Cortlandt-Peekskill area, and it is now busy concocting Christmas treats en masse.
"We have lines out the door," owner Rose Sanca said.
There's one specialty she can't keep in stock. "The item everybody fights for: cannoli chips and dip," said Sanca. It is a tray of triangular cannoli chips, with three variations: powdered sugar, chocolate drizzled and chocolate dipped with a bowl of cannoli cream for dipping.
The best part of the chips and dip is that nothing goes to waste, said Sanca, an entrepreneur. "Dollar for dollar, this is a terrific value, there's no waste involved," she said. Customers can purchase the chips and dip and store them for up to a month. And the chips won't get soggy like normal cannolis. There's no need to drive to Arthur Avenue and no need to wait in line on Christmas Eve, she said.
Homestyle's business is split between retail and wholesale. Chips and dip fly out the door, but Homestyle also serves an enormous array of cakes, pies, pastries and cookies. The wholesale holiday menu has more than 40 items. Cookie trays are also popular during the holidays, Sanca said.
The business began in Buchanan. Sanca was selling apple dumplings out of a coal oven for 14 years before she moved to the Peekskill location Homestyle is most associated with today.
Sanca said she hopes to eventually pass the bakery on to her children, who will continue the business. She continues to renovate and improve her business. The outside of the building recently received a new coat of stucco.
Orders should be called in in ahead. Lines can be long during the holidays, she said. Although the bakery tries to be well stocked, items tend to sell out.
Homestyle is at 24 S. Water St., Peekskill. Call 914-737-2902 for more information. Homestyle will be open Christmas Eve from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. but closed Christmas Day.
