Cortlandt Circuit City Could Become Big Lots Store

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Discount retailer Big Lots Inc. may move into the long-vacant Circuit City building on Route 6 in Cortlandt. Currently, building's owner is in negotiations with Big Lots Inc. Town officials and real estate sources are hoping the deal will close in the next few weeks, solidifying the retailer's place in Cortlandt.

"I'm just happy something's in there," said Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi. Ken Hoch, director of the code office, said the company picked up its first building permit Monday.

Town officials seem relieved to have an interested party for the Circuit City property and to have the property out of Bankruptcy Court, where it's been for at least three years.

"We're just happy to have a tenant," Hoch said. The building has been conspicuously empty during Circuit City's bankruptcy proceedings. The building fell victim to vandals at one point, who entered and damaged the interior, said town and real estate sources.

The space is 27,500 square feet. Puglisi said she hopes the store will open by the end of 2012, or possibly in the first quarter of 2013. She said the discount retailer could bring as many as 60 to 80 jobs to the area.

Big Lots Inc. operates 1,533 stores in the United States and Canada. Of all the stores, nearly one-third operate in four states: California, Florida, Texas and Ohio, where the company has its headquarters.

Among a wide variety of items, the store sells clothing, furniture, food, makeup and other consumable goods.
