Pelham Memorial High School seniors Benjamin Hurd and Jonathan Salama have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Less than one percent of the more than 1.5 million U.S. high school students who entered the competition by taking the PSATs in their junior year qualified as semifinalists.
As semifinalists, they will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to be considered for a Merit Scholarship award by advancing to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent are expected to attain Finalist standing and about half of the finalists will earn a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
