Pelham Middle School student Sarah Jane O’Connor was presented with a citation for winning first place in Assemblywoman Amy Paulin's (D-Scarsdale) contest, “There Ought To Be A Law.”

Paulin will draft a bill to mandate insurance coverage of hearing aids in response to O’Connor’s proposal.

O'Connor visited Paulin, along with PMS Principal Rob Roelle, Superintendent Peter Giarrizzo and Director of Humanities Maria Thompson.

The contest asked middle school students to identify a problem impacting New Yorkers and suggest a law that would rectify the issue.

Seventy-two students submitted proposals for legislation. Two winners were from Pelham Middle School and two were from Tuckahoe Middle School.

James Nespole, also an PMS eighth grader, was awarded third place for his proposal regarding the creation of a Good Samaritan Law, which would protect people who take action saving children left unattended in a hot car.

Tuckahoe seventh-graders Jack Doherty and Hayden Ehrenfeld tied for second place.

Doherty proposed legislation to protect a student's athletic records from tampering and alteration. Paulin will draft a bill mandating that school districts create policies pertaining to athletic record protection.

Ehrenfeld proposed a ban on the pesticide class neonicotinoids, which has been cited as a cause of declining bee population. Paulin will be a prime co-sponsor of legislation by Assemblyman Steve Englebright, (D-Setauket), that would prohibit their usage.
