The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“As a grandmother of eight and a former PTA president, I know that quality education is paramount for our children,” Lowey said in a statement. “I’m proud the students, teachers, and administrators at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School have been recognized for their outstanding work. I also congratulate the parents, families, and communities for their support of these schools.”

The school was among 337 nationwide to earn the distinction.
