"On April 17th, 2023 at 2pm in the afternoon, my wife Karen and I lived through a nightmare that no parent should ever have to experience," a GoFundMe for Michael Lane, of Hingham, reads.

"While crossing the road on his bike at the crosswalk on First Coast Highway near Harris Teeter on Amelia Island, we witnessed our 13-year-old son Michael be struck by a car and thrown 36ft face down on pavement," Michael's father Kevin wrote. "The severity of the impact could have killed Michael, and as my wife and I ran to his side we were both preparing for the worst."

Michael survived the crash but sustained several injuries including a severe break to the tibia/fibia on his right leg, a broken nose, and broken clavicle, according to the GoFundMe campaign.

This ultimately led the family to extend their time in Florida to care for their son. Michael's parents decided to set up the campaign to help with his medical costs, recovery costs and college funds.

Ten days and more than $52,000 dollars later, Michael has since been released from the hospital and was recovering at a friend's house on Amelia Island. The family will now embark on an 18-hour drive back to Massachusetts so Michael can continue his treatment in Boston.

"We are beyond grateful for, and blessed by, the outpouring of prayers and support by our family, friends and community," Kevin wrote in an update. "The love and support that all of you have shown has encouraged us so much to remain positive and keep moving forward."
