SOMERS, N.Y. The Somers Board of Education approved Tuesday a tax levy for the upcoming school year in the amount of $70,858,956.
Previously, the tax rate was estimated to increase 3.94 percent, and with final calculations it came out to a very close 3.92 percent.
Tax rate has multiple variables involved in it, said Kenneth Crowley, assistant superintendent of business. Other school districts that cover more than one municipality, he said, have more contributing factors than others.
We have one town, so we dont have to deal with equalization rates, Crowley said. With one less variable to consider, he said the board was able to predict a tax rate increase that only differed slightly from the actual amount.
Crowley also spoke to the board members about keeping in contact regularly with the assessors office.
Assessments are our major resources toward deriving the tax rate, he said. The assessors are on top of keeping the school district in on whats going on. Its what the public expects government to do.
Superintendent Raymond Blanch also thanked the support from the community with regards to school taxes.
We delivered on what we said we would do, he said about the setting of the tax levy. Its all about creating good facilities and getting the best instructors that we can.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 28, which will focus on personnel matters and last minute hiring for the year ahead.
