Croton Business Honored With Westchester Earth Day Award

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Westchester’s annual Earth Day recycling awards were announced Tuesday, with a ceremony slated for Sunday, for community members and business that have showed commitment and innovation in environmental leadership.

County Executive Rob Astorino will present the following Westchester residents and businesses with their awards Sunday, April 21, at noon.

Municipal Earth Day Awardees include:

  • The Village of Mamaroneck for providing residents with a comprehensive recycling guideline informational package, which included an impressive, all-encompassing refrigerator magnet recycling/solid waste collection schedule.
  • City of White Plains for investing in “alternative fuels” in its Public Works fleet, including compressed natural gas, B-20 biodiesel, E-85 ethanol as well as fully electric-powered vehicles. 
  • Village of Scarsdale for instituting pilot programs in two of its parks demonstrating the “Love ‘em & Leave ‘em” waste reduction initiative.
  • Village of Bronxville for sponsoring demonstrations of the “Love ‘em & Leave ‘em” waste reduction initiative at the Village Green Committee’s “Take Back Day” events.

The highest pounds of recycled material per person per day (PPPD) recorded in 2012 went to:

  • Village of Pleasantville (0.21 PPPD)
  • Village of Hastings-on-Hudson (0.19 PPPD)
  • Village of Ardsley (0.17 PPPD)
  • Village of Bronxville (0.17 PPPD)
  • Village of Irvington (0.17 PPPD)
  • Town of North Castle (0.17 PPPD)
  • City of Rye (0.17 PPPD)

Notable programs honored include:

  • Furniture Sharehouse for reducing Westchester's waste by collecting unwanted used furniture and redistributing it directly to local families in need. 
  • Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival Zero Waste Initiatives, the oldest and largest annual environmental celebration in the nation, hosted at Westchester’s Croton Point Park and organized by Hudson River Sloop Clearwater Inc.
  • PleasantvilleRecycles for Bringing Zero Waste to the Annual Pleasantville Music Festival.
  • Hastings High School Envirothon team, a five-student group led by teacher Melissa Shandroff, for placing fifth among the 48 teams from around the state in the 2012 New York State Envirothon.
  • Pleasantville Middle School’s Eco-footprint program for inspiring students to start composting fruit waste on Fridays, educating parents on car idling and reducing paper use.
  • Elementary schools of Katonah Lewisboro School District for composting and maintaining a garden and greenhouse. 
  • Jeffrey Fukushima of Yonkers' Paideia School 15 for winning second place in 2012 in his age group for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation New York Recycles! Poster Contest and winning first place in 2011.
  • The Blue Pig in Croton-on-Hudson for being a model for an environmentally conscious business by purchasing milk from the nearest dairy farm within the Hudson Valley and growing its own ingredients, such as berries and herbs, from its rooftop garden.
