CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Three Cortlandt women were each named as honorees for State Sen. Greg Ball's Women of Distinction award, along with 22 others from the New York State Senate’s 40th District.

Guinevere Ferris of Buchanan is a lifelong volunteer and advocate for education, according to Ball’s website.  “She started the first storybook hour at Hendrick Hudson Free Library, founded the WHO (We Help Others) Club, and was the first elected woman trustee in the Village of Buchanan.”

Janet Mainiero of Cortlandt spearheaded the effort to obtain salvaged steal from the fallen World Trade Center to create a memorial in honor of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, Ball’s website said.  She organized volunteers and established a nonprofit organization to raise funds for the memorial, of which the first phase was built on the shores of the Hudson River in Croton Landing and dedicated last year.

Cynthia Lippolis of Croton-on-Hudson , a 33-year village resident, "has dedicated her life to volunteerism and making the community around her a better place,” the website said.  Lippolis is the broker owner of Prudential River Towns Real Estate and a 15 year member of the Rotary Club of Croton-on-Hudson where she has served as club president.

“The Women of Distinction Ceremony was a project I launched in recognition of Women’s History Month and inspired by the accomplished and outstanding women I have had the privilege of collaborating with through my current tenure serving the people of the 40th Senate District,” Ball (R,C,I – Patterson) said in a statement.

In March, Ball asked residents of his district – which includes parts of Westchester, Dutchess and Putnam counties – to submit nominations.

“While all those nominated have worked and volunteered without want of recognition, their efforts have not gone without notice or appreciation. The diversity and depth of their work speaks to the amount of time and dedication each has volunteered on behalf of and in support of a simple truth; that all change is local,” Ball’s statement said. “Each took it upon herself to respond to some compelling community need. These women did not wait or idle when the opportunity for real change presented itself. Instead, each used her own unique talents and skills to respond to an issue or challenge in her community that merited action.”

The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame will be held Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel.  The honorees will also be included on a Traveling Wall of Fame that will be on display throughout the district.
