YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Rosemarie Allouche-Gunning has always been a fierce advocate for her children. Now is she is in the fight of her life.
Allouche-Gunning, who has lived in Yorktown with her family for two years, was recently diagnosed with Stage Four Ovarian Cancer. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for her mounting medical bills. The money raised will go directly to the family. As of Tuesday afternoon, $4,750 has been raised from 30 people over six days.
Allouche-Gunning is married to Peter and they have two children, Jonathan and Thomas. Jonathan was diagnosed with Severe Non-Verbal Autism and Thomas was diagnosed with higher functioning autism.
Sanford DiDonna, a close friend of Allouche-Gunning and who set up the GoFundMe, said Allouche-Gunning fought vigorously to make her children had the best services.
Last Christmas Eve, Allouche-Gunning's mother passed away, but she was unable to attend the services in Florida since she had been battling constant fatigue and not feeling well. She soon was diagnosed with cancer, which has spread to other parts of her body.
"They had a very arduous road, spending the las 10 years fighting for their children," DiDonna, who is helping to care for the family, said. "When they had the opportunity to sit back and relax, this came about."
She is currently receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in West Harrison.
"Through all this, Rosemarie has persevered with strength and dignity," DiDonna said.
DiDonna said the medical bills have become insurmountable and the family will soon have to sell things off to stay afloat.
"They've been together for 20 years and this is something that popped up out of the blue," DiDonna said. "Our goal is to help the family and also raise awareness about this cancer."
