Black Cow Becomes Hub for Residents Without Power

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – About 28 percent of the residents in the Village of Croton continue to struggle with power outages, as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, three days after a freak snowstorm dumped at least six inches of wet, heavy snow on the area.

“It’s been crazy here,” said Zoe Grant, a barista who has worked off and on at the Black Cow for five years. “The line has been out the door from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., non-stop.” She said many people come in to charge their phones or use the Wi-Fi.

Con Edison is estimating that power will be restored to all Croton residents by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. The community room, in the basement of the Stanley H. Kellerhouse municipal building, located at 1 Van Wyck Street, will remain open indefinitely according to village officials.

Residents can enter the municipal building through the doors located nearest to Old Post Road. Residents are welcome to spend the night in the community room, but should bring a pillow and blanket. There are restrooms, but no shower facilities available.

“They act more disheveled, they’re all frazzled and stressed out,” said Grant about first-time patrons coming into the Black Cow, looking for warmth and Wi-Fi. “We’re so dependent on electricity, people freak out.”
