John Branca was a gutsy guy who, as mayor, did his level best for countless nights to be a buffer between us (the picketers) and the staff of the Diamond Club. Although, as a Democrat, I didn't share his political views, I have only admiration for a "non-politician" who stepped up from the role of ordinary citizen to become leader of the community. I would remind everyone of the Roman hero Cincinnatus who reluctantly left his farming to serve his fellow citizens, at their request, as head of the Roman Republic. View Comment

This tragedy calls for all of us to stand together against bigotry. There is no place in America for "ethnic cleansing". We are better than that! While Sikhs, with their beards and turbans, are often mistaken for Moslems, there is no conceivable excuse for gunning down Moslems, either, since the overwhelming majority of Moslems in America are peaceful and law-abiding. The few hate-mongers among us who spread lies about persons of the Moslem faith, or other religions, need to become much more enlightened about the guiding principles of the world's major religions...particularly their own!
