I find it very disturbing that baseball icons enjoy a different standard of accountability than others. I am no fan of Lance Armstrong. Yet he has been thoroughly pilloried and banned for life from cycling, as well as having to give up his 7 Tour de France honors and trophies. Alexander Rodrigues gets what amounts to a slap on the wrist, does not have to return any trophies or honors from past successes and only gets what amounts to a 1-year seat on the bench. More kids look to ARod as a role model than look up to Armstrong. How about an even playing field for ALL athletes who cheat with performance enhancing drugs. View Comment

I too would like to see a substantial mandatory fine if convicted of texting or talking while driving. As a grandmother, when my grandkids are in my car, I regularly point out bad drivers as well as why I gave right-of-way, pulled over (to answer my cell phone or let a tailgater go past me), slowed down (while passing a bicyclist), etc. This is an important way to show them good driving habits. I also emphasize that the safest way to put distance between yourself and a dangerous driver is to let them pass you, not engage in a right-of-way contest. My daughter goes a step further. She will call 911 to report an erratic driver. View Comment

When you don't require your passengers to buckle up, especially children, it becomes more complicated. I will not start my engine until everyone is buckled. I certainly agree that drivers who use a cell phone or text (?!!!) while driving should be hung by their thumbs. But it's easier to spot someone without a seat belt than someone using a cell phone. I'm grateful that the police are going after any of these fools. View Comment

Just so you know, while they are not gorgeous, they are harmless unless you are an edible plant. Do not try to use poisons on them! You'll harm yourself, children, pets, birds, etc., and will do virtually nothing to the cicadas. There is nothing you can do to deter them. So we just have to grin and bear with them till they disappear for another 17 years. View Comment

And the Silent Auction has such a wide variety that the real question is what not to buy. This Sunday, April 28th, "A History of the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation–Celebrating its 75 Years" will be the program at the Annual Meeting of the Pound Ridge Historical Society. It will be presented by Beth Herr (former curator of the Trailside Museum) and Maureen Koehl (Lewisboro Town Historian) at the Pound Ridge Town House (255 Westchester Avenue). I am sure that transportation would be offered if the the child were blind under the American with Disabilities Act. It should be obvious that this child has no way to get to school without school transport. It is not a stretch at all to apply an existing remedy for this situation, Think just a smidgen out of the box, Bedford Central! View Comment

The problem with the poll is that it only lets you name one animal. I've seen bobcats, bears, coyotes, foxes, opossum, otters, in addition to the more commonly seen animals like raccoons. It's a great thrill to see so much wildlife in my own backyard, although the bear was in South Salem, not Pound Ridge. View Comment

While this winter had much more snow than last year, in 2011 the ground was covered with 2 feet of snow for most of the winter. People forget that a typical New England winter is pretty white for three months. And we are climate-wise in New England. If schools hadn't closed and delayed opening for relatively small snowfalls (and in several cases, just the possibility of snow), vacation time would not have been affected. View Comment

It's been my pleasure to do the typesetting, work on the graphics & designing with Ricky and facilitate the mailing since the Little Book's revival in 1990. This year there is a new page with all of the information on what to do when there is a power outage. This includes information for Pound Ridge and Bedford with emergency resources such as warming stations, water, etc. Our Office of Emergency Management in Pound Ridge was extraordinary but some people didn't know what was available, and where. What is the environmentally safe treatment McHale uses? I recall reading that applying something on the lower 4 feet of the exterior can keep them from invading. Apparently they do not fly onto the house, but crawl. View Comment

It also is a major problem when it has been planted in wetlands as it has been here in Pound Ridge. This clogs the free running streams. Unless you've got a herd of pandas to nibble it into submission, it should be planted in oil barrels with the ends cut off which are sunk in the ground leaving a 1 foot rim above ground (as suggested by The Bamboo Man in New Jersey, a professional bamboo supplier).
