You are ill informed. By saving the auto industry the President not only saved jobs but he created them; the auto industry is growing an has been creating thousands more jobs. The President's American Jobs Act was the only reasonable and doable proposal set forth and the Republican controlled House set it aside and refused to even consider it. However, even without Congress, the President has laid the groundwork to create 12 million jobs over the next four years -- something for which Mr. Romney absurdly has been taking credit in his usual dishonest manner. In addition, once President Obama's AJA is passed -- and it will be if he is reelcted -- it will create more construction and manufacturing jobs as well as expand the energy industry, including alternative renewable energy sources, and that will be The Next Big Thing. Disaster relief is something for which we depend on the Federal Government to provide. I just received an email from Representative Nan Hayworth that said she has sent a letter to President Obama that supports the same request sent to the President from Governor Cuomo. I find this surprising and wonder what the Congresswoman was thinking when she approved that email. After all, she voted for Representative Paul Ryan's budget, which slashes funding for FEMA. This is another example of the Republicans, including former Governor Romney, talking out of both sides of their mouths. They are for a miniscule Federal Government, but everytime they turn around they are faced with another way that the Federal Government plays an important role. As is typical of Nan Hayworth, she talks about the importance of a strong partnership between local, state and federal governments, but then turns around and votes against it. That has been her approach since 2010; she tells her constituents one thing, but then does the opposite. We need to replace her if we are going to move forward with President Obama; we need to elect Sean Patrick Maloney to the House of Representatives to represent New York's District 18. View Comment
It is apparent that the BSA could use some extensive training in etiquette, ethics and empathy. Their policies and this situation are very disturbing and certainly not conducive to an enriching environment for young people. View Comment
This is the nightmare of everyone who has to stay in a hospital -- the lack of security. Anyone can walk in and out of a patient's room. Admittedly, this is unusual because it involves a parent; however, hospitals must ramp up their security to protect all their patients, especially their tiniest and most vulnerable! View Comment
Vice Presdient Biden clearly won the debate on facts, substance, experience and style. Representative Ryan refused to answer questions in a straightforward manner and he was woefully ignorant of the facts with regard to Afghanistan and other foreign policy questions to a terrifying extent. In addition to his extremist and unrealistic positions, I cannot imagine such a lightweight in the Oval Office!
Ms. Raddatz was an excellent moderator, although I thought two of her questions were entirely unnecessary - the one on the candidates religious positions with regard to abortion and the one about what kind of man each one was. The time could have been spent on a more substantive discussion regarding a woman's right to control her own body and access to women's healthcare needs including birth control. View Comment
Although I was disappointed in the President's debate performance I am not disappointed in his performance as President. I plan to vote for him on November 6th. I am bewildered why anyone would vote for the opposition given their extreme stances on all issues, and given the obvious lack of character of Mr. Romney and the track record of obstruction in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representative Ryan. I thought that after seeing what selecting the wrong candidate can do to the country Americans would know better. Unfortunately, in tough times people can make horrible decisions. My hope is that the contrast in character between President Obama and his opponent, his phenominal record of accomplishments given what he started with, the September jobs report and what I expect will be two upcoming excellent debate performances -- and Ohio coming through! -- will seal the deal for the completion of that bridge that President Clinton envisioned for the 21st Century. Investing in green insulation might be a good bet, but take care not to "seal" your home so much that you have no air circulation and trap bad air inside as well as keep the cold air outside. And, airing out your house by opening windows during the winter periodically keeps air fresh and gets rid of toxins that might build up.
As for fireplaces, for many years we have just used ours to arrange candles to burn, and the effect is beautiful, elegant, peaceful, cleaner and more energy efficient than lighting our fireplace. If we do burn wood occasionally, it's just for the ambience and not to keep warm. View Comment
President Obama is a seasoned statesman who has devoted his life to the study and service of his country. He has saved the American economy that his Republican predecessor nearly destroyed, and has been rebuilding it despite the obstructions from Paul Ryan and other House Republicans.
In contrast, Mitt Romney is a venture capitalist who has devoted his life to dismantling companies, destroying jobs and lives for his own economic benefit. As a venture capitalist, Mitt Romney views the U.S. as a failing company to be dismantled, and its citizens as employees to be fired (and we know the first he will let go: military personnel, veterans, students, senior citizens, the sick and the poor -- all that dead wood, as he views them). Venture capitalists do not have the mindset to lead a country, and Mitt Romney views the Presidency as a career goal for himself rather than a contribution to his country.
The two men have two different mindsets and two different visions. Mitt Romney's and the Tea Party's is too frightening to consider: a society in which there are only the rich and the poor and no middle class and no American Dream; where only wealthy women have access to birth control and a choice whether to continue a pregnancy or not; where people die in droves because of a lack of healthcare; where only the wealthy can get a college education; where the quality of food, water and air are so bad that disease is rampant and no access to quality healthcare, if at all.
But, this America will ultimately result in the destruction of the wealthy, as well, as they will have no one to do their bidding or save them from a natural disaster that destroys their homes and businesses. Because, as President Obama so wisely pointed out, the wealthy did not get that way on their own.
I know who I want at the helm of my country in these challenging times. My vote will go to President Barack Obama. View Comment
I am gratified that the Somers high school student was confident enough to report the incident, and the the police pursued the complaint. This is the type of crime that wasn't always taken seriously, but not any more! And, it is another lesson that one can sink his future by making the wrong choices, conducting himself inappropriately and destroying his reputation. He has made himself his own victim. View Comment
I am very pleased and relieved to see that Westchester County is cracking down on texting while driving. However, the article did not report what the consequences will be if someone is pulled over, and how those consequences might differ betweent minors and adults. View Comment
Justin Wagner is right to do this! While I support exploring various energy sources to help the U.S. to become energy independent as well as improve the economy, destroying the environment and lives in the process makes no sense. I am very nervous about Governor Cuomo's initiatives on energy; on the one hand he wants to close -- rather than fix -- Indian Point, which will increase energy costs and place more of an economic burden on New Yorkers, but he's willing to risk our water supply by allowing fracking. And, apparently Senator Ball is dragging his heels on the issue. We need a sensible, sane and proactive voice in Albany, and that voice seems to be Justin Wagner. View Comment
Fabulous idea! A win-win for everyone. I'm just wondering, though, if the chlorine in the pools bother the dogs the way it bothers humans, and if it irritates their eyes and dries out their coats. Just a thought. I remember that a former vet used to advise that I put a few drops of baby oil in my dog's eyes before bathing him to protect his eyes should soap get in them. View Comment
That's a misleading sound bite that conservatives love to use. But following that logic no workers at any level should ever receive a salary increase, for cost of living, merit, profit-sharing, etc. Of course the minimum wage should be raised; this is the 21st Century and we are have arrived at a point in history where we behave in a civilized manner and treat people fairly. Greg Ball and his Republican colleagues would love to lead us into the 19th Century; we don't need that type of leadership. We need the progressive leadership that Justin Wagner will provide. The facts that Representative Nita Lowey and Representative Nan Hayworth are both wealthy Westchester women who are running for reelection to Congress are things they have in common. What they don't have in common are their Congressional records.
Representative Lowey is a long-time member of Congress who is an extremely popular and productive legistator who's been called "one of the most influential Members of Congress” and someone who "delivers for New York." Ms. Lowey has opposed the infamous Paul Ryan budget plan because it will cause extensive and long-lasting damage to the U.S. economic recovery and especially to women and families. Ms. Lowey is a keeper who always delivers for New York; we are safe in her hands and I will be proud to cast my vote for her in November.
In contrast, Representative Hayworth is a Freshman member of Congress who supports the Paul Ryan budget and despite her assurances to her District 18 constituents consistently votes with the Tea Party and against the people she represents. I am a resident of Representative Hayworth's former district in which I saw her time and again support legislation that hurt women and senior citizens but favored the wealthy, like herself. She supports the Paul Ryan budget that would take New York and the rest of the country back to the 18th Century, eliminating just about every government agency and hard-earned right for women, children, African-Americans, senior citizens, students and the American worker. What is interesting is that Representative Hayworth votes in her own interests as a wealthy individual in order to keep her taxes lower than yours and mine, but votes against her own interests as a woman. She obviously believes, as do the rest of her 1% comrades, that a restriction on her rights as a woman will be offset by her wealth. Nan Hayworth is wrong, and she can be stopped from committing further damage by replacing her with Democratic challenger Sean Patrick Maloney, who will protect Medicare and Medicaid for today's and future generations, protect women's Constitutional rights to privacy, choice and healthcare, as well as their hard-earned money, and work to create jobs for both women and men.

What a great idea! As dog lovers, and owners of several wonderful beasts over the years, my husband and I would like to add that treating one's pet or working dog well on a daily and ongoing basis is the best way of honoring your dog.
For one thing, this includes not leaving your dog alone in a car, ever. We continue to see this everywhere, year around. Even in the cooler weather, once the motor is off the car heats up and dogs cannot regulate their body temperature the way humans can; moreover, something could go wrong with your car while you are away. Further, some people will leave the car's motor running with the A/C on only to return and find that the A/C shut off and their dog is in distress or worse, or they leave the windows rolled down leaving their animal vulnerable to passersby. Dogs can suffer, have their systems weakened, be injured or abused, be let out of the car, bite someone and be taken from you, dognapped or even die while left unattended.
Another way to be kind to your dog is to feed him or her a high-quality dog food that is prepared with less corn and other fillers and more protein, and refrain from feeding him/her table scraps that do not contain the proper vitamins and minerals they need and often contain dangerous additives that affect dogs more quickly and severely than they affect humans.
Don't let your dog run loose unattended, scream at or hit him or her when you become frustrated, or leave dangerous items around to be ingested, especially around the holidays (tinsel and Easter basket grass can be deadly to both dogs and cats).
Finally, bathe and groom your dog often and lovingly. You'll both be glad!
I'm sure others will have even more tips!
Dogs are our best friends and they deserve our best in return.

As a senior citizen, I agree that those senior citizens who are on a fixed income should not have be forced out of the community because of rising property taxes. But there are some senior citizens who can well afford to pay the going rate. Perhaps the tax rate for an individual senior citizen should be based on her income and, such as a sliding scale. Perhaps that sliding scale should be applied across the board, at least temporarily in these difficult economic times.
But, then, what is Senator Ball's plan to make up the shortfall in order to protect schools and students from the rising costs of education? How will Senator Ball ensure that the quality of education in public schools will not be compromised? The public school system in New York State should not be compromised. Half a plan is not a plan.
