The soccer team made it to the sectional finals before losing to Byram Hills 3-2 in overtime. The team finished the season 7-8-1.

"We had a pretty remarkable run," soccer coach Ed Polchinski said.

Yorktown soccer's Cinderella run saw them go on the road and defeat Panas, Tappan, Hendrick Hudson and Somers.

The regular season had its ups and downs, Polchinski said. The team lost five in a row at one point and was plagued with bounces that didn't go their way.

"If we didn't have bad luck, we wouldn't have any luck at all," Polchinski said. "I give credit to our boys. I knew we were good, our record just didn't show it. I always had a special feeling with this team."

The team was in a competitive league, facing schools like John Jay, Brewster and Horace Greeley, having moved up to Class A.

"I thought if we got in the playoffs, we might be able to make a run," Polchinski said.

Yorktown's run was aided by Mohamed Hanza, who had a knack for scoring game winning goals, despite playing with an injured hamstring.

"We got the breaks we needed," Polchinski said. "You need skill and you need some luck. I thought our team had the skill. We played at such a high level."

Polchinski said his team was like a family and everyone enjoyed the miracle run. He praised his captains for helping the team stick together.

"They kept everyone intact at practice and during the games," Polchinski said. "Everyone pushed each other. Our seniors showed a lot of leadership."

While he was disappointed with how the season ended, Polchinski and his players will never forget their run.

"It was a little tough for them," Polchinski said. "But on the bus on the way back we had some pizza and realized the remarkable run we had. I told them we were successful, we aren't losers."
