Two Cortlandt Football Teams Face Off Friday Night

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Neighboring rival high school football teams Lakeland and Hendrick Hudson will meet Friday on the latter’s home field Friday at 7 p.m.

The two teams enter the contest after very different starts to their respective seasons. Lakeland tore through its first two opponents with powerful offense, while Hendrick Hudson split its first two relatively low-scoring games.

The Lakeland Hornets blanked Yonkers, 41-0, in the season opener and then dominated Riverside, 47-6, in week two. The running game has been the weapon of choice for Lakeland so far this season.

The Hornets rushed for 392 yards against Yo,nkers and 277 yards against Riverside, which averages out to 334.5 rushing yards per game. Lakeland passed for just 22 yards in week one and 56 yards in week two for an average of 39 passing yards per game.

But the Hornets have yet to face a team of Hendrick Hudson’s caliber. The Sailors defeated Beacon, 29-12, in week one and then gave Class B power Croton-Harmon a fight in a 14-6 loss in week two.

The Sailors could struggle against Lakeland, though, particularly on the ground. Hendrick Hudson gave 205 rushing yards to Croton-Harmon, and the Sailors will need to find a way to slow down the Hornets’ rushing attack. Lakeland will likely use its ground game to try to wear out Hendrick Hudson.
