Ossining-Sleepy Hollow Renew Neighborhood High School Football Rivalry

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Located just under 5 miles from each other on Broadway-Route 9 as the crow flies, the Ossining Pride and Sleepy Hollow Horsemen rehashed their longtime rivalry for the 41st time Friday on opening night of the local Section 1 football season.

The Horsemen, backed by nearly 1,000 loyal fans in silver and red, took the measure of the home-standing Pride with a convincing 55-27 victory, opening a 41-14 halftime lead. Quarterback Joey Good threw four touchdown passes on 14 of 22 completions, two scores to receiver Dan Chevere, who had seven receptions for 120 yards.

The Horsemen took a 21-18-2 lead in the series that began in 1985.

But the opening night crowds on both sides of the field, at least 1,500 on the Pride side, proved that the more than four decades of football were more than just about the score.

"It's a great game every year," Sleepy Hollow Athletic Director Chuck Scarpulla said. "Last year (Sleepy Hollow won 41-32) it was back and forth all game. There's a great crowd."

Cheer teams from both schools kept the night and the crowd alive even with the score a bit lopsided. And the Ossining band helped get the home town crowd going.

On the Sleepy Hollow side, fans filled the bleachers and overflowed on to the sidelines and the team from 6 miles south responded by rolling up the score and taking the win.
