The University of New Hampshire junior and Cortlandt Manor resident was persuaded to try out by UNH assistant field hockey coach Ross Gorham. Not only did Bozek make the team, she helped it win a gold medal.
Bozek and her teammates went 4-1 at the 33rd annual RohrMax Cup in Austria earlier this month. The team defeated Slavia Prag, 3-2, in the gold-medal game.
“This year Ross, our assistant coach, mentioned tryouts,” said Bozek, a 2010 Lakeland graduate. “I was very excited about the possibility of wearing United States on my uniform.”
Bozek wanted to try out for the team her senior year at Lakeland, but a torn anterior cruciate ligament sidelined her.
A starter on defense at left back, Bozek said the team made the necessary adjustments after a loss to Slavia Prag, 6-1, during preliminary play.
“Winning the gold medal was very exciting and it was the first ever won by a United States indoor team,” Bozek said.
