Currently in her 32nd season as head coach, Sarsen and the Hornets are off to a 9-0 start on the heels of four consecutive state titles. In outscoring opponents 53-5 through nine games, the squad seems poised for a five-peat. Team USA Field Hockey recently chased Sarsen down for an interview to see if she had a secret to success.

“I think it’s a combination of things,” Sarsen told Team USA. “Having stability and consistency within a program, whether its club or high school, developing youth programs and incorporating the community, creating a culture of success and having the kids know that they will have great opportunities ahead of them if they come into the sport.”

On top of seven state titles for Lakeland in the last three decades, Sarsen now also the Hudson Valley Club team and the USA Field Hockey’s Futures Program. Team USA asked Sarsen the question many of her colleagues and players wonder: does she give herself any me-time?

“It’s consuming, but yes, I try,” Sarsen told Team USA. “I’m going to the movies to see “The Butler.”  I love Oprah! I do a lot of travelling in between a summer league and camps that I run. I love the Yankees, and we traveled to Boston to watch a game. I went to Virginia Beach to watch my Futures athletes play and traveled to Saratoga. I really make an effort to capitalize on short opportunities when I have them.”

The Hornets will shoot for 10-0 with a home game tonight versus John Jay High School at 7 p.m.
