For 13 weeks over the summer, 12-year-old baseball players from the United States and Canada take part in a 104-team tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., that features some of the best baseball players in youth baseball, culminating in the Cooperstown Classic.
The Quad State team was made up of players selected from New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Delaware.
Coached by John Volpi of Mohegan Lake, the Quad State team won four elimination games on the final day to go 11-0 for the tournament.
The championship victory came when Quad State won against the South California Terror by a score of 6-2.
Selinger led Quad State with 16 hits, including a grand slam in a quarterfinal victory over a strong Select Maryland Team that the Seminoles defeated 9-7. Selinger was among the Quad State team leaders in hits, runs, home runs and RBI’s.
Cummings was the pitcher of a record-winning two games, while giving up just one run in the tournament. Cummings also had a grand slam and a three-run hit.
“The game we won in extra innings was the turning point in the tournament for us,” said Cummings, “The bases were loaded with no outs, and coach Volpi brought us all on the infield to make sure we got a force at home on any hit ball. Not only did Zack get the force out, but it was hit back to Zack, and we got a double play. Then Zack struck out the last batter to save us. I knew we would go all the way after that.”
Selinger plays locally for the Gators baseball club, and Cummings plays for the Shrub Oak Storm 12U.
Both Selinger and Cummings attend Copper Beech Middle School in the Lakeland school district.
