Hendrick Hudson To Induct 7th Hall Of Fame Class

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Hendrick Hudson High School will induct six new individuals and one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame in October.

The school will induct its 7th annual class at a dinner Oct. 12 at The Cortlandt Colonial Restaurant. The inductees also will be part of a halftime ceremony during the Sailors’ homecoming game the following day, according to Will Mauro, chairperson of the Hendrick Hudson High School Athletic Hall of Fame .

Two skydivers will drop in with the United States flag and the game ball as part of the ceremony. The inductees are:

-- Doug Pritts of the Class of 1994 played football, basketball and baseball for Hendrick Hudson. He has the record for longest touchdown pass in Sailors’ history at 97 yards.

-- Francis Harding of the Class of 1962, known as “Bud” to many, wrestled and played football for the Sailors. He was the first section champion in wrestling in Hendrick Hudson history.

-- Irwin Mayer, who died in 1960. He taught physical education and health at Hendrick Hudson from 1940-60 and served in World War II from 1943-45.

-- James Jacoby of the Class of 1963 played football, basketball and baseball at Hendrick Hudson. He co-captained the undefeated league champion Sailors in his senior year on the football team. He was named Team MVP that season.

-- Tom Cole of the Class of 1981 ran cross country and track in the fall, winter and spring for Hendrick Hudson in each of his four years there. He earned All-League and All-County honors in his senior year and led the cross country team to the only state meet in school history. He finished 19th at the state meet that year.

-- Vincent Verdeschi taught physical education at Hendrick Hudson from 1954 until his death in 1965. He led three different Sailors basketball teams to Western Westchester League Championships and was the athletic director for the district in 1960.

-- The entire 1962 Hendrick Hudson football team will be inducted. That group of Sailors played all eight games on the road because the school had not yet built a football field, but the team still finished 7-0-1 to become the first undefeated team in school history. It also was the only undefeated team in Westchester County that season. Head coach Bob Litchard led the team to the Western Westchester League Championship.
