Hen Hud Volleyball Looks To Regain Secton 1 Title

MONTROSE, N.Y. -- Hendrick Hudson High School volleyball player Carlee Corkery referred to it as an “awful feeling,” regarding the conclusion to the 2011 Section 1 Class B Volleyball Championships.

Eventual champion Pelham Memorial High School defeated Hen Hud in a semifinal match. It was the first time since 2005 that a Hen Hud varsity volleyball team did not win a Section 1 Championship.

“We’re looking at it as a learning experience,” said Corkery, now a senior in her fourth varsity year. “Now that we know how awful it feels to lose, we are going to work much harder this year.”

Hen Hud was engaged in an intense practice Friday as veteran coach Diane Swertfager briefly stopped play during side-outs to explain aspects of what happened.

Jessica Sincero, also senior and four-year varsity performer like Corkery, explained the preparation for the 2012 season began immediately following the 2011 season.

“We started work-out sessions three times a week with coach,” said Sincero. “That was helping us become stronger. We went to a lot of camps and when the summer came, we began having captains’ practices.”

Corkery and Sincero are two of six returning seniors who want to bring the sectional title back to Hen Hud. Joining them are Jessica Pellacio, Bianca Cavaleri, Alyssa Cascone and Nicole Smith. Junior Gabby Kempski and sophomore Morgan Loh also return.

Hen Hud has a busy first week, opening the season at Mahopac on Sept. 5, before hosting Yorktown on Sept. 7. Hen Hud will host its’ Volley For The Cure Tournament on  Sept. 8.

“We are starting to work well together and continuing to build up to how we know we can play,” Sincero said. “We have a lot more confidence in each other. I am excited and can’t wait to see how we do this season.”

Corkery feels the same way.

“We all have high hopes and we are going to work as hard as we can to start a new beginning,” Corkery said.
