CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Croton Tigers football team begins defense of its Section 1 Class B championship Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Nanuet with a regular-season finale that will determine postseason playoff placement.

The Tigers (4-2), who opened the season with three straight wins and lost twice before getting back on the winning side with last week's 28-14 victory over Westlake, are currently ranked third in Class B with 1.67 points in the Piner Point standings that determine playoff positions.

Nanuet, also 4-2, has 1.17 points and needs a win to be one of four teams that make the playoffs. The Piner Points system uses wins, losses and strength of schedule to rank teams. Our Lady of Lourdes (4.27 points) and Pleasantville (2.37) are currently ranked 1-2 in Class B.

Both teams defeated Westlake and lost to Our Lady of Lourdes during the regular season. Croton defeated Pleasantville, the No. 3 ranked team, but Nanuet did not.

Running backs Trevor Wolstencroft, Brian Soares and Nick Grous join quarterback Ben Gelfand in a run-oriented offense that gains more than 150 yards per game. The Tigers defense, led by Matt Gennarelli, has allowed 19 points per game while the offense has scored at nearly the same rate, 18.7.

A loss to Nanuet will drop the Tigers and elevate Nanuet in the rankings. A win could lift Croton into the second spot in good position for next week's Class B semifinal round.

Go tigers. Even though I moved to pa from croton in '75 I still follow the tigers and went to a game last year. Good luck in the playoffs Joe Baxter
