His Tigers have not won the Robert E. Mayclim Memorial Basketball Tournament, which Croton hosts each year, since 2008. If his team can recapture the title, Thom hopes that will help build momentum at this early juncture of the season.
“I did say to our guys earlier (that) this could be a turning point in the year,” Thom said.
Croton started its season with a 60-55 win against Martin Luther King, Jr., a game in which Ian Thom, William’s son, broke the school’s all-time assist record with 291 for his career.
The Tigers certainly have a special player in Thom, but the coach tempered his expectations for the season because the team graduated nine seniors and currently has five sophomores on the roster.
“I think we could be pretty good at the end, but it’s not going to be a 16-5 year,” Thom said. “I think we’re going to grow into ourselves .… But now we've got to see when the lights come on how we do.”
