This qualifies them to compete in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, in April. The competitions -- which involve students from around the country -- are organized by the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematics Association.
"These are difficult tests and having two students qualify is quite an accomplishment," said Yorktown High School Assistant Principal John Gollisz, who also supervises the school's math programs. "We are proud of them -- and to boot they are both ninth graders."
The first Mathematical Contest was given in 1950 and sponsored by the New York Metropolitan Section of the MAA. Since then, it's evolved and now more than 350,000 students from roughly 6,000 schools participate in the MAA-AMC contests. Of these 10,000 students qualify to participate in the AIME, held in April.
