The students spent two weeks preparing for the parade, which was integrated into the social studies curriculum as part of the New York State Common Core.

The students learned about symbols in the Chinese culture and their meanings. The parade was the culmination of their work.

The highlight of the parade was the authentic dragon head that many students marched under. Other students marched with lanterns and drums used in the Chinese culture.

Preschool teacher Elizabeth Pezzulo said she appreciates how the unit exposed the children to different cultures.

"The students were very excited to be able to show the high school staff and students," Pezzulo said.

The pre-k program at Walter Panas High School has morning and afternoon sessions with a total of 46 students.
